Motivation - An Intrinsic Approach

The business model of the 20th Century was one based on carrots and sticks; If you do this you will get this bonus and if you don’t then you will get nothing, apart from more work to do by an even tighter deadline! The strange thing is this worked and it was fairly successful as a motivator. As with time however, things have moved on and the carrot and stick motivator is being proved time and time again to be ineffective as a method of motivation and so some of the largest business’ in the world are turning their attentions to a new model.
By giving their workers Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose (the three crucial parts of intrinsic motivation), companies like Google, Wikipedia, Linux and Firefox have grown to be major players in their fields without ever selling a product, without ever offering a carrot or a stick. What makes this whole field even more amazing is that these ideas have been researched for nearly sixty years by the likes of Richard Ryan, Edward Deci, Carol Dweck, Valery Chirkov plus many more of the worlds leading research behaviour scientists/psychologists from organisations including MIT, The London School of Economics, Yale, Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge Universties. Educational establishments all over the UK base many of their school policies/teaching methods on similar carrot and stick models. We bribe our young people into behaving, we incentives the one ornate behaviour they have as humans, which is learning and we then are surprised when the progress educationally our young people make is below what we would expect an advanced nation to have. The questions that need to be addressed are:

  • Do the current school systems of bribes and incentives motivate our students to learn.
  • What defines a culture in which pupils and staff get connected to their intrinsic motivation
  • Why educational establishments need to move towards intrinsic methods of motivation.
Include Solutions is working with other leading professionals to explore a new approach to running our schools.
